Sometimes just the smallest intervention can change the whole character of a home, like this beautiful aluminum addition in Utrecht. Called the Lighthouse and designed byBYTR Architects, the Dutch home's mesh-wrapped top floor floods the interior with diffused natural lighting. At night, the panels are back-lit and give off a lovely ethereal glow that the neighbors are surely jealous of.
BYTR has transformed this home with a gentle, minimalist touch. The aluminum mesh contrasts nicely with the original, more traditional facade without being too offensive and – set on top of what was previously the top floor – the addition creates a rooftop terrace and herb garden with amazing views of the adjacent canal.
The new interior gaps are filled in with a vertical bookshelf that doubles as stairs, generating an inspiring, uplifting new space for the family to enjoy. And thanks to all the new light provided by the “eye” of the building, which obviates the need to use electrical lighting, no doubt the Lighthouse’s owners are enjoying a significantly-reduced energy bill!
