London-based product designer Émilie Voirin [1] has courageously re-interpreted a crop of iconic modern chairs into fantastic biodegradable seats. Using woven rattan [2] and bamboo, the designer created sustainable versions of Verner Panton [3]‘s ‘Panton chair’, Michael Thonet [4]‘s ‘Thonet Chair No. 18′, Charles and Ray Eames’ [5] ‘LCW Plywood Chair’ and Frank Gehry [6]‘s ‘Wiggle chair’. Rattan is a durable plant fiber that is often used for making furniture, baskets, and other household items, however Voirin has adapted the material to give these classic chairs a sustainable twist.

Made in collaboration with Fei Liang & Jerome Nelet, the re-interpreted classic chairs take the ironic name ‘Made in China’. Designed back in 2008 for «kkaarrlls» [7], these four chair designs are surprising, fun and – unlike their modern forebears – completely biodegradable. Émilie Voirin studied at ENSAD Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris [8], participated at Fabrica [9], and worked for Tom Dixon [10] before establishing her own studio in London from where she designs products, creates art, and writes.
