Designer Jurg Grassl has found a way to recycle our old magazines [1] in an illuminating way. A finalist in our Bright Ideas Lighting Design Competition [2], Grassl’s lamp is a simple construction that uses the pages of colorful cast off periodicals [3] and low-heat LED light bulbs to create a “stained-glass” lamp. Dubbed the Maglight [4], the lamp is a sturdy and safe tabletop piece that casts a colorful glow of distinct patterns and photographic imagery.

We all have one- the bin dedicated to storing our magazines, catalogs and periodicals that used to come and overtake our mailboxes. But as we read more and more of our news, entertainment and fashion online [5], the bins have become an afterthought. To breathe new life into the forgotten literature, Grassl sought to make use of the growing commonality through the Maglight.

By looping selected pages [6], the colorful advertisements and editorials are transformed from simple magazine pages to luminous columns of color with a stained glass [7] effect. Grassl has also carefully carved  away a “base” out of the bottom of the looped pages, making the Maglight a self-standing table top lamp with a  “shade” and “base.”

Maglight is truly a green light fixture that is long lasting, energy efficient, and comprised of gorgeously upcycled everyday materials.
