Japanese Artist Makaon Recycles Trash into American Pop Culture Icons

We love recycled art projects that divert waste from landfills, but we are especially fond of artists who put a little creativity and color into their designs. Japanese artist Makaon ^[6] uses all kinds of found materials (including coke cans and white glossy cardboard packaging adored with Japanese print and other "waste") to fashion miniature replicas of some of America's favorite pop culture icons.

Makaon collects every day materials that most people consider to be rubbish ^[7], cleans them off, sometimes crushes the cans if necessary, and sorts his bounty of recycled materials into different colors. Then he sets about crafting miniature replicas of characters such as Little Kitty, Darth Vader, the Smurfs and even My Little Pony.

His attention to detail and color is extraordinary. We were particularly impressed with Batman and Darth Vader, and I wouldn’t be a girl if I hadn’t noticed that My Little Pony looks just like I remember her from all those years ago! Of course, Makaon doesn’t restrict himself to American characters. He has an enormous portfolio of work ^[6], which we urge you to visit.
