Gone are the days of using cork [2] only for corkboards and wine preservation. With the emergence of cork as a furniture-building material, designers are able to create eco-friendly pieces with a unique look. Recently debuted at ICFF 2009 [3], Iannone Designs [4]’s new Cork Media Console is crafted from renewable material harvested from the bark of the cork tree – a sustainable process that doesn’t harm the tree itself.

Iannone Design [5] is a Philadelphia–based design firm specializing in eco-friendly modern furniture [6]. Among their new offerings this year is their Cork Media Console, a minimalist storage unit that celebrates the raw character of cork. The unit features four beautifully marbled cork doors and routed detailing that shows off its bamboo plywood construction.

But don’t be mistaken – Iannone Design doesn’t only work with cork. Another 2009 design is their best-selling Dandelion Dresser [7], constructed of FSC–certified plywood with kirei [8] doors. The kirei doors are made from reclaimed stalks of the sorghum [9] plant. The grain, which is harrvested in Texas to be used primarily as animal feed, also makes incredibly beautiful eco-friendly furniture. In addition to their less common materials, Iannone Design also uses metal and plastics in their all eco-friendly furniture.
