Flights can be long, boring, and lonely when traveling solo. Which may be why a man decided to smuggle his pet turtle through Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport security by disguising it as a hamburger. On July 29, a passenger with the surname Li placed his shelled companion inside a KFC hamburger, and then packed the animal in his bag. As Li’s luggage went through the X-ray machine, attendants noticed odd, limb-like protrusions emerging from the sandwich.
The technicians understandably wanted to inspect Li’s luggage. “There’s no turtle in there, just a hamburger,” he reportedly said. “There’s nothing special to see inside.”
Upon opening his bags, they found the unticketed passenger. When asked why he decided to give his little friend an edible costume, Li said that he wanted to travel with his ‘beloved” turtle. He later agreed to allow a friend to look after the animal while he was away. Hopefully, the reptilian ruse was simply a strange expression of a man’s love for his turtle and not an experiment in smuggling endangered species in the future. Or perhaps even more diabolically, a sequel to Snakes on a Plane?
