Map13 recently completed construction on Bricktopia - a spectacular domed pavilion next to Barcelona's Fabra i Coats art space. The brick pavilion is located on the site of an old spinning mill, and it's designed to serve as an events space that provides shelter from the sun. The undulating form was constructed for the Eme3 International Festival earlier this year.
Bricktopia’s materiality reflect the industrial nature of the courtyard and the nearby nineteenth century factory. However pavilion’s curved shape explores another dimension that contrasts with the rigid forms surrounding it. Instead of following the same forms of its surroundings it creates concave spaces are sheltered from the surrounding world.
The vaulted pavilion is an economical, functional and versatile form that is native to Catalonia. Its complex shape required an impressive amount of craftmanship to build, which brings up an interesting contract to the mechanized facilities that surround it.
