Marcus Thymark’s Open-Source FilaMaker Shreds and Recycles Plastic for 3D Printing

German engineer and inventor Marcus Thymark [5] is developing a filament-producing machine that allows 3D printing [6] enthusiasts to grind up and reprocess discarded printed objects and other scrap plastic for re-use. Called the FilaMaker [7], Thymark’s machine is based on a powerful hand-cranked shredder that can be made from steel or stainless steel. He is working on integrating the shredder with a melter and extruder, which will allow the user to recycle scrap plastic into new filament.

Thymark says the FilaMaker [7] can handle different kinds of plastic, such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polyethylene (PE), and polypropylene (PP). The design of the machine allows the user to handle materials in different forms (even plastic bags), and to easily switch from one material to another. The video below gives you an idea how it works and demonstrates the processing of several types of plastic in various forms.
Thymark has begun selling two models of his shredder. He has turned FilaMaker into an open-source project and has made 3D models [9] and drawings [10] available for DIYers.
