The building is located on a 30,000 square-foot site at the corner of Soquel Drive and Aptos Rancho Road, and its massing design is heavily impacted by the site’s slope. Mark Cavagnero Associates designed a two-story facility built into the site with a single-story western façade consistent with neighboring retail stores. The eastern entry elevation highlights the project’s other principle design consideration: two wings connected by a “bridge”. The “bridge” connects the two-story precast concrete volume with a one-story cedar clad box. The facility has become a well-regarded and oft-toured building, as the community is impressed by the sustainable and modern design.

The LEED Gold Certified building focused on energy efficiency, reduced consumption, and the site’ location in the community. The site is situated so that occupants can utilize public transportation and bicycle commuting. Low-flow plumbing fixtures and xeriscaping help to keep the facility’s water consumption low. Photovoltaic panels on the roof provide for 12% of the facility’s electricity needs, and the design exceeds the baseline energy efficiency standard in California by more than 20%.

The building’s sustainability can be seen from one last perspective. This building and the Community Foundation’s mission is helping to create longevity and purpose for many nonprofit organizations around the world. These nonprofits therefore can continue to help those in need while fighting for a mission high above what one building can provide for a community.
