Inhabitat favorite Marmol Radziner [1] just officially launched a brand new line of affordable modular prefab homes, the Locomo [2] (which stands for LOwer COst MOdular). The official announcement was made today at the Dwell on Design Conference [3] in Los Angeles. Prices for a LOCOMO home top out at about $250 per square foot, but start as low as $200. That means for $200,000 to $700,000 depending on model and location, individuals and families have a great opportunity to live in a fabulous pre-fab home.

The Locomo [2] line is available in one, two, and three bedroom single story structures, as well as a four bedroom two-story model. Each model carries all the sustainable advantages of building a prefab home [4] including the ensured reuse and recycling of excess materials, high quality thanks to a factory controlled environment, and a low footprint upon the existing site landscape.

Sustainable options for interior finishings include bamboo [5] flooring in the living and bedroom areas along with Marmoleum flooring in the bathrooms. Low-E glass runs throughout each of the floor plans, providing ample daylighting [6] while blocking UV rays. Energy Star Bosch kitchen appliances ensures ample efficiency in all of the Locomo’s kitchen appliances. An “on demand” tankless water heater saves energy while grid-connected solar panels [7] provide renewable energy. In addition to various other sustainable features, radiant heating and geothermal systems are also an option for new home owners of the Locomo.

We’re excited about making affordable green prefab homes more available to individuals and small families,” says Marmol Radziner [2] Managing Principal Leo Marmol. “The launch of the Locomo series aims to bring a shift in the modern prefab housing market, allowing more potential homeowners to participate in the movement with more affordable options now available.
