Three young designers working under the name Masiosare Studio [1] are creating green products that mix humor and Mexican identity with a cradle-to-cradle design approach. Their Ms line is comprised of 4 collections that use 100% recyclable or biodegradable materials [2] – mostly stainless steel and felt. Their products are laser-cut flat pack [3] objects, which are packaged in recycled paper envelopes and are easy to assemble (and disassembled when their life cycle is over) by the user. Even their lamps use high-density LEDs that consume less energy and last longer that any regular light bulb. Read on for a closer look!

If you are not Mexican, you probably didn’t catch the joke implicit in the studio’s name. “Masiosare” is a made-up name that comes from the misreading of the Mexican National Anthem, which is now part of the country’s pop culture. Alfonso Díaz, Aldo Gutiérrez and Eduardo Meza, founding partners of the studio, use this kinds of reinterpretations throughout their products which touch subjects such as contemporary Mexican identity, sex, religion, and even office jokes. But Masiosare’s work can’t be misinterpreted as just fun objects; their Ms product line [4] is a full range of functional solutions for lighting, space organization and personal accessories.

Masiosare works on client-requested projects while producing their own line of products that use materials and processes that produce the least environmental impact possible. Creating a brand of green products in Mexico has been a challenge in many ways for Masiosare Studio, who prefer not to market themselves as a eco-designers since they firmly believe that it’s the only way to design nowadays. Producing responsibly makes it hard to compete in price with similar products, but Ms products’ success is attributed to their ingenious design that strikes a chord in the Mexican market.

Using sustainability [6] as a core principle for their work, Masiosare Studio is part of a new generation of Mexican designers with a strong sense of responsibility for their work. In the following weeks they will be presenting new products for their Ms brand, which will expand to include fashion accessories.
