Making our way across town at this year’s Copenhagen Design Week, we spotted the Paper Chair – a striking sculptural seat that combines a humble biodegradable material with cutting-edge technology. Created by Danish-born, London-based designer Mathias Bengtsson, this stripy, zebra-like, layered chair is made from thousands of paper sheets glued together. The Paper Chair is a great example of the potential of eco-design, as it has no frame, no joints and no screws, but still manages to boast a stunning, modern form!
In order to make his striking design pieces, Bengtsson likes to work first by hand, then using CAD and precision laser-cutting technology. We have seen his plywood chairs designs before, but this time he recycles his own concept, changing the material and the direction of the layers; here he uses a more sustainable material (paper) arranged vertically instead of horizontally. Using paper as his base material allowed him to simply glue the layers together, giving way to safer construction and way to recycle it or even compost it at the end of its useful life.

This is absolutely incredible. Who knew Paper could be constructed into fully working furniture. I love it.
