McLaren Automotive is set to officially unveil its newest hybrid supercar, the McLaren P1 at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show next month. Although we are still a few weeks away from the show, McLaren has released details on the hybrid supercar’s drivetrain. The McLaren P1 not only packs a total 903 horsepower from its hybrid powertrain , but also has the ability to drive up to six miles in electric mode.
The McLaren P1 is powered by a mid-mounted 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine and an electric motor that has a combined output of 903 horsepower and 664 lb-ft. of torque. The V8 engine alone produces 727 horsepower, while the electric motor adds another 176 horsepower. The engine’s engine block has a unique casting to incorporate the electric motor . The electric motor is mounted directly onto the engine, and all drive is channelled through the dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox to drive the rear wheels.
The McLaren P1 can be driven in several modes, powered by the engine and electric motor together, or solely by the electric motor . In E-mode, the McLaren P1 can travel more than six miles with electric-only power. When the 211 pound battery is empty, the engine will automatically start to maintain drive and charge the battery. In addition to the battery being charged via the engine, the McLaren P1 is also equipped with a plug-in charger which can recharge the battery, from empty, in only two hours.
McLaren is going to take the wraps off the production-ready McLaren P1 next month.
