Meinhardt’s “Hopscotch” installation, showcased at the Vivid Sydney light and music festival, had visitors hopping up and down to create their own LED light rainbows. The low-energy light installation was one of more than 40 projects by local and international artists that encouraged interaction from visitors.

Conceived by architectural lighting design firm Meinhardt Light Art, “Hopscotch” had guests jump up and down on the historic Moore stairs at Circular Quay in Sydney, Australia, according to World Architecture News. By jumping up and down on the steps, visitors were able to switch colored light beams on and off, effectively creating their very own rainbows at night.

“Hopscotch” comprises of steps illuminated by color-mixed LED spotlights. The installation displays the full color spectrum of light from violet blue to deep red, with a monochromatic light and RGB lights blurring together as the steps are lit. The lights are automatically turned on or off via a micro-wave beam that detects movement. If a person runs up or down the steps, a moving rainbow of light is created; alternatively, two people can play on the steps to create a “dance of light.”

Although a fun and visually engaging, interactive experience, the “Hopscotch” installation essentially demonstrates how the control of light allows us to conserve more energy. According to Meinhardt’s Senior Lighting Designer Fiona Venn, the installation is a playful way to show how modern sensor technology can ensure that we use light only when and where we need it.
