Looking like strands of Rapunzel’s hair, these felt LED lamps [2] can be braided, knotted, or bunched into any shape. French company Metylos [3] designed its Mathilde pendant light series to be ultra-customizable and eco-friendly, providing interior spaces with a warm light that radiates through the meandering stripes of the fairytale luminaires.

The Mathilde lamps are composed of shades made of fringed wool felt(3mm,) topped by beech cones and pearls. They can be up to 100cm long and adjusted using two washers. The braided, knotted or bunched strips of felt conceal a 120cm electric cable and a LED light [5] source.

The unusual use of materials [6] is combined with an unconventional shape which, if it weren’t for the light source on the top, would make one wonder about its purpose. As the positions of the strips change, depending on the desired shape, the intensity and quality of the light alters and transforms the lamp into a self-illuminated art piece.

Metylos showcased the Mathilde collection at this year’s ICFF in New York [7].
