Founded in 2008 by Paula Silva-Ruvalcaba and Rodrigo Vázquez Guerrero, Le Porc-Shop has burst into the Mexican design scene with objects that have a unique and powerful identity, and link to their cultural context. Their earlier collections Tiger, Hue and Layser apply color with no fear to home furniture made from willow wood, proof of their energetic approach to design. Last year they had an exhibition at Mexico City’s Galería Mexicana de Diseño [5], considered by many the most important store for Mexican design.

Besides Banca Familiar, Le Porc-Shop recently presented a series of projects that include collaborations with other artists, open workshops, and a new product for the Galería Mexicana de Diseño [5] 20/20 anniversary collection. At many occasions, Le Porc-Shop functions as a true atelier, becoming a medium for others to create and design, which adds to the brand’s versatile portfolio.

Artist Rubén Méndez [6] collaborated with Le Porc-Shop for the Hybrid Economy Bureau, a recycled piece that follows his artistic pursuit of visual ambiguity. His design seeks out to establish “a dialogue between public and private, between friendly and hostile, between cold and warm.” He mixes materials like metal, wood and glass in an unusual way, stepping out of the usual furniture aesthetic.

Through their Unknown Folk Object (UFO) workshops, Le Porc-Shop [3] aims to produce small pieces using waste materials from their workshops. In a very intuitive and empowering manner, participants work for one day at the factory to produce objects with their own hands, using only simple processes and their imagination to create functional objects. The UFO workshop has occurred twice, with participants ranging from various backgrounds and nationalities, all working on an open brief to create their own everyday objects.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the Galería Mexicana de Diseño [5] launch the 20/20 collection, for which Le Porc-Shop designed Bancarrota; a clever multipurpose DIY object. Bancarrota is a stool, a paper bin, or a side table, made from scrap lumbers and plywood assembled with colorful plastic fasteners.

Every single piece of Le Porc-Shop [7] proposes a twist of what furniture is or is conceived like, and each is carefully hand crafted green design with a new Mexican identity.
