Michael Graves, one of the New York Five and a household name after his stint designing for Target, has just completed his highly anticipated 121-acre Resorts World Sentosa, eco-resort on an island off the coast of Singapore. The multi-million square foot complex features six hotels, a casino, a convention center, a waterfront auditorium, a spa, a marina, an animal park, retail and restaurants. Sentosa, seen over at The Architect’s Newspaper, features a number of sustainable features that make the mega resort as energy efficient as it is enjoyable.
The vast resort is located on the island of Sentosa and has enough activities and attractions to keep a family occupied for days. Concept renderings show a resort that seems to be a cross between Disney World and the computer generated world of Myst, and considering that a Universal Studios Theme Park is right next door, the entire complex is bit fantastical. Every little detail was designed and created by MGA for the resort – even the gifts that would be sold in the shops. On top of all that, the resort’s premier luxury hotel is called Hotel Michael!
Graves and his team worked to make the complex energy efficient and environmentally conscious in the tropical climate. Conditioning for day and night time activities had to be controlled to make it pleasant for guests and “eco-coolers” are use to provide cooling to outdoor areas (how is that green exactly?), while photovoltaic systems provide power and green roofs insulate the buildings. The resort apparently won a Gold Plus award in the local Green Mark program.

I gues green is in the eye of the beholder? this seems like a huge energy waster to me.
Seriously how is this green?. Having recently visited this awful mall/casino I was dumb-founded at how ugly and dated it was (even for a casino). Looks like it was designed in 1994 and that hotel mentioned is the tackiest thing my eyes have ever had to endure. The amount of water and energy this place uses is terrible.
