Designer Michal Jelinek recently put together a series of concept vehicles for use on ice. We particularly like this one, called Black Ice, which is a fuel cell turbine-powered glider. Hydrogen fuel cells would give this vehicle seriously green propulsion, but what we love best about this glider is the traction provided by the one giant tire the driver sits inside to steer.

We have to assume the vehicle would have either a window through the front of that wheel or a video screen to help the driver see the way forward, however, or things could end very badly with a tree right between the fuel cells. Regardless, the Black Ice looks like a ton of fun to drive across a frozen lake, and we look forward to seeing more concepts from Mr. Jelinek.

So apparently, neither Michal Jelinek or Inhabitat has had a winter reverie destroyed by the sound of an off-road vehicle, or a day at the beach ruined by the persistent drone of mindless jet-skiers.
“Design will save the world.” Indeed. How exactly?
