Shopping carts [1] are rarely offered a second life after being spent transporting our groceries, but Frankfurt-based designer Mike Bouchet saw the hidden potential of the common cart. By cutting the basket [2]open and removing the sides, the American-born designer managed to turn this common grocery store fixture into a chair dedicated to leisure. Slated for an unveiling by Nathalie Karg and Cumulus Studios [3] at Design Miami [4] 2011, Bouchet’s recycled chaise-carts can be wheeled just about anywhere.

Bouchet enabled the chair [5] to reach lounging status by simply snipping the front and backs of the carts – this simple alternation allows the chair to be bent forwards or backwards into a reclining position. The fragile goods- or child’s seat- portion of the cart are repositioned into adjustable height headrests. The bent metal has been reinforced to make it structurally sound to withstand wear and tear.

Bouchet’s cart chairs are available in a variety of angles and models, ranging from chair to lounger. Each comes with a fancifully patterned polyester foam cushion, for outdoor use, rain or shine.

Boucht will soon take the chairs to the next level by outfitting them with extras such as parasols, armrests, side tables and stereo system with iPod dock. The designer even plans to have a love-cart made for two!
