MILAN 2009: Designersblock Show

Each year the Designersblock show at the Milan Furniture Fair brings together an incredible assortment of designs by a diverse range of designers, and their 2009 offerings did not disappoint. At this year’s show it’s back to basics with simple, raw and natural materials dominating the exhibition. Some of the designs appear to have come out of an afternoon spent in the woods or countryside. Others look like they were shaped by nature itself. Designers seem to have made it a point to give new value to worn out or overlooked objects and to work locally with traditional makers and manufacturers. Designersblock once again showcases some of the most relevant thoughts on today’s design.
The duo from Drill found a playful application for their amazing material made with layers of wood and acrylic.
Chris Eckersley came up with this idea for Byrdhouses while watching a video of The Byrds on YouTube.
Toby Sanders turns the beach balls of his childhood into jolly lamps.
With her collection ‘Furniture With Memory’, Agnieszka Lasota gives a new value to old and worn out pieces of furniture.
Ioseb Andrazashvili won the Product Design-Make Price competition 08/09.
Vietnam-based designer John Reeves gives a contemporary look to the traditional technique of sand casting, working closely with local craftsmen.
Straw and cord form this eco-chair, designed by Jan Rytir .
Asma Hussain collaborated with Graham and Brown to manufacture her exquisite birdcage wallpaper, using eco-paper and VOC–free inks.
The way Marcella Foschi reuses old objects like cast away cardboard to create new ones is really delightful.
Stuart Miller used only cardboard to design this chair.
Ercol products are cleverly manufactured to produce minimum wood waste.
Asma Hussain uses 100% wool felt to create her wall covering.
