The Mill Valley Cabins provide accessory space for both a yoga studio and an art studio on a hillside lot north of San Francisco. Feldman Architecture [5] was asked by their clients to create the additional space in a way that would minimize impact. Terraced on the slope, each building is compact and has a small footprint sited between existing trees that would require only minimal grading. The upper studio is for art, while the lower studio is for yoga and doubles as a private guest room with a full bathroom.

Each cabin is oriented to capture different views and has an arched roof that pulls in natural daylighting. Clerestory windows, skylights and large overhangs maximize light and minimize overheating in the summer. The roof of the yoga studio is planted with succulents [6] to provide additional space for the client to garden. Views from the upper cabin look out over the planted roof, which blends into the landscape. Additional landscaping around the cabins help them disappear into the surrounding lushly vegetated landscape.
