In a desert city known for sprawl, Miller Hull Partnership has delivered an award-winning development that goes to show density can be a good thing. The Safari Drive Condominiums in Arizona recently rocked the 2010 Builder’s Choice Awards, winning the “Project of the Year” as well as the award for “Condos-for Sale Grand.” The modern mixed-use project incorporates smart passive solar design, locally manufactured materials, passive cooling, and drought-tolerant landscaping.
“Safari Drive is not only a beautiful piece of architecture, but it sends the right message to the housing industry at the right time,” said Boyce Thompson, editorial director of BUILDER magazine. “It demonstrates just how personalized and livable an urban infill, mixed-use project can feel, even with a modest increase in density. The team created a landmark out of an overlooked lot.”
Working with a site less than five acres large, Miller Hull managed to fit a total of 165 condominiums ranging from 800-2,300 square-feet, 17,000 square-feet of live work lofts and 10,000 square-feet of retail space and amenities. Five different multi-level buildings introduce a new, very livable density to an area located in the “midst of consumptive sprawl.” The project is considered self-sustaining; a vibrant mixed-use urban neighborhood that is perfectly suited for living and working. Outdoor spaces create welcoming private getaways while bigger areas facilitate for more public gatherings.
Safari Drive has been certified by Scottsdale’s Green Building Program for Multi-Family Dwellings. The project is also the recipient of the 2010 National AIA Housing Award; 2010 Merit Award AIA Arizona; and the 2009 Merit Award, AIA Seattle.
