Minimalist Summer Home by Lode Architecture Blends Into the Landscape of Brittany, France

Almost everyone dreams about owning a holiday home in France ^[6], but for eco-minded folks energy efficiency and a small footprint are also important. Lode Architecture's D House ^[7] on the banks of an estuary in Brittany fits the bill; it's a double-story daylit home that is partially folded into a retaining wall.

Just 250 square meters, the compact D House comprises a perfect blend of home and landscape, private retreat and party house. The double glazed first floor, which is tucked into the earth, boasts exceptional views of the outdoors, while light wells from the upper floor ensure that plenty of natural light ^[8] illuminates both floors.

A refreshingly open floor plan is arranged around a floating cooking island and staircase; most of the private quarters are located upstairs, where wood trellises diffuse the daylighting ^[9] to create intimate spaces that are connected with the wooded landscape. Meanwhile, the facade combines a mixture of glass and wood, establishing an further merging of outdoors and indoors.
