The first thing that caught our eye about Mint Hotel near the Tower of London was the beautiful living wall cascading down the side of it. But when we started to look into it, we realized the hotel goes way further with its commitment to sustainability and that's when we were really impressed. Tack on energy efficient design, use of renewable energy, a green roof and a BREEAM 'Very Good' rating and you've got yourself an eco hotel of the highest quality - all within a historic part of London near all the famous sites. Looks like we know where to stay next summer during the 2012 Olympics!
Designed by Bennetts Associates Architects , the Mint Hotel Tower of London is a modern boutique hotel located right in the heart of the city. Topped with a lush green roof and padded with Europe’s largest living wall , the hotel adds an elegant touch of greenery to the city’s historic streets. Both of the living elements are self-sustaining and introduce plant biodiversity, which attracts birds and bees into the city. All materials for the hotel were strictly sourced from northern Europe, including cladding from Germany, UK and Belgium; casegoods from Ireland; public area furniture from the UK as well as a green wall was grown right in the UK.
As for energy efficiency, the 583-bedroom hotel uses 40% less energy per bedroom than hotel standards and overall carbon emissions were reduced by 30%. Strategies include the use of a high performing envelope, low-e glazing, deep reveals for the glazing to provide shade, operable windows, infrared sensors for lighting, ground source heat pump, a combined heat and power unit, and high efficiency mechanical systems. Additionally 165 photovoltaic panels on the roof generate renewable energy for the hotel. Bennetts Associates and Mint Hotel worked closely with the Greater London Authority, the City of London and AECOM to achieve a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating.
