A forgotten and disused beach along the Warta River in Poznań, Poland got a major overhaul last summer with the help of container architecture. The KontenerArt Project brought life to the area with an infusion of the arts and a riverfront container bar, hammocks, lounge chairs and shipping pallets. Designed by local firm Mode:Lina Architekci and funded by the city, the summer program hosted concerts, workshops, and film screenings and invited people to hang out, socialize and relax.
Rather than let the beautiful riverside sandy beach go to waste, the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the city of Poznań funded a project dedicated to the arts. Mode:Lina kept to a tight budget and made use of shipping containers , pallets and OSB to create a lively beach bar and social club. The main structure features an open air bar and enclosed seating areas for colder days, which is topped by a rooftop deck and another elevated structure. Surrounding this are a variety of lounge options in the way of shipping pallets, hammocks and beach chairs. Adjacent is a series of brightly painted containers that are used for studio space, design workshops, fashion events, musicians and more through a rotating program.
The goal of the project was to provide space for independent artists in the city to gather and create as well as for everyone for participate or enjoy the arts. The 2012 summer program saw 35 concerts, 60 workshops, many film screenings, meetings and discussions. Starting in April, KontenerArt will begin gearing up for their 2013 season, which will include many events, concerts, workshops, artists and even design competitions. The program will open again in May.
