What structure is simple to erect, easy to move, and will keep you cozy on the windy Kyrgyz steppes? If you answered “Yurt” , you are correct!
Not just for Mongolian nomads anymore ? the traditional Central Asian yurt has been updated by a company called Pacific Yurts, who have revamped it into an economical and efficient contemporary mobile dwelling. The compact shape of the yurt and lightweight tensile structure means that the dwelling is highly efficient in maximizing strength while minimizing use of materials.
If you are like me and have never seen a yurt in the flesh, they are similar to tents ? only bigger, sturdier and completely weather-tight. They are made from circular wooden frames that can be erected in a few hours, covered on the top and sides by a canvas wrapper. Pacific Yurts have taken the high-tech route and made their modern yurts from Douglas fir latticed frames, covered by vinyl walls and ceilings.
Starting at just $4150 for the smallest models, Yurt living sounds like an attractive option for the budget-minded contemporary nomad.

I used to live in a yurt and they’re grand. Um, can you tell us where the bathroom is?
thanks,
c
Like with any prefab house, you would need to get plumbing and a bathroom installed after you set up the framework of the house. You could put the bathroom wherever you want.
The lack of insulating walls would seem to be a challenge.
I see a reference to insulation in the FAQ.
What R-value can be attained? How much cost is added if you add insulation to the walls, windows, and roof?

Forgive me for being a know it all, but the Mongolian word for this house is gher, yurt is the Russian word.
Where can I buy a yurt from?
Last year I bought a traditional yurt that is 6 and a half metres in diametre – and it’s easy as pie to keep warm and cool. It has 4 fabric layers, one of them i 1.5 cm yak felt. The accoustics are amazing as well. I set it up on the grass for the summer and have stored it for winter because it doesn’t work well with wet and cold unless you’re living in it (and therefore heating it). Much better than one canvas layer on top.
Dear all, if you are looking for a authentic Mongolian yurt (ger), built using traditional methods, then I would suggest you take a look at the following website which offers them for export.
