The world’s first folding wheel has been named a winner at the 2013 Design of the Year Awards presented by the Design Museum in London . The lightweight Morph wheel , created by Vitamins Design for Maddak, won first prize in the transport category and has a shot at becoming this year’s overall winner. The final results for the Design of the Year 2013 will be announced on Tuesday April 16th.
Originally conceptualized as a folding bicycle wheel and redesigned for the wheelchair community, the Morph folding wheel has a volume of only 12 liters and measures 80 centimeters by 32 centimeters when folded. It is made from a composite material that is both strong and lightweight and can be fitted with conventional rubber tires. This makes it easy for users to get replacement tires from their local supplier after the tread starts to wear, claims designer Duncan Fitzsimons, who first started working on the concept while studying at the Royal College of Art in London.
Among the other winners of the Design of the Year Awards in seven categories are the renovation the faded 1960’s Tour Bois-le-Prêtre tower block in Paris, a landmark documentary on fashion icon Diana Vreeland and Gov.uk website that brings together different UK Government’s websites into one single site.
