MOSS is a Solar and Wind Powered Prefab Office That’s Perfect for the Backyard

Roadways are clogged, global emissions are high and causing unprecedented climate change and people are miserable from road rage. To combat all those problems, Victor Vetterlein ^[6] designed MOSS, a prefabricated home office powered by clean, renewable energy. Vetterlein suggests that employers can either lease or purchase these 13 foot octagonal offices, which would be installed in their employees' backyards, driveways or even on their roofs. Completely connected to the main office, these units are expected to boost productivity while also taking a host of cars off the road.

Vetterlein has thought of every last detail to ensure the Micro Office Systems Space concept has a small environmental impact while still providing a comfortable and professional working environment for company employees. The main structural frame consists of laminated tree farm wood ^[7] and steel connection plates, while the interior boasts Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs). The cladding, which is extremely well-insulated and weather tight to boost energy efficiency, is made with Aluminium Composite Panels (ACP).

The rooftop solar panels ^[8] serve two purposes. In addition to providing solar energy for electricity, they also create shade during the summer months as they are slightly lifted off the roof with brackets. Infrastructure also exists to mount a small wind turbine and the home office is warmed with radiant underfloor heating and a wood-fired stove. A skylight promotes natural ventilation and slashes the daytime lighting requirement. Two of these prefabricated units ^[9] can be transported on a flatbed truck, unless the user opts for a 3 foot extension that includes a small kitchen, toilet and wastewater tank.
