It’s a pretty old trick to take a simple steamer or colander and use it as a light shade, so designer Nadia Belalia [1] upped the ante with her series of transformed and customized steamer lamps [2]. Belalia has deconstructed the lowly kitchen utensil into a series of lamps with a steampunk [3] sensibility – rivets pin petals of folded stainless steel, giving each design a kinetic punch.

Colanders are a natural fit for repurposing into lamps and sconces, since those little holes help diffuse the light’s glare. Working with classic collapsible steamers, Belalia takes the natural geometry of the perforated steel wings and expands them into satisfying shapes.

Throw a (LED [4]) light bulb in and voila – high design with low-tech materials. We got a few glimpses of Belalia’s ceiling lamps at Wanted Design [5] during New York Design Week [6], but her oeuvre runs the gamut of lighting design [7] – including sconces, floor and table lamps, and even a chandler [8].
