So far we’ve seen many examples of kitchen utensils being repurposed into customized, low-tech and eco-friendly objects – but these gorgeous colander light shades [1] by New York-based designer Nadia Belalia [2] bring a special steampunk sensibility. Inspired by the “abundance and rawness” of industrial material in the New York, she created the series of lighting fixtures which combine the strength of metal with soft oval forms. Belalia’s lamps are currently on display at this year’s ICFF in New York. [3]

New York-based designer Nadia Belalia has taken upcycling [5] a notch higher and created elegant lighting fixtures [6] which look both industrial and organic. The result is a soft perforated shade which adds in the diffusion of the glare of light. All you need to do is put in a LED light bulb and you got yourself a piece of high design made with low-tech materials. Besides pendants, her lighting design also includes scones, floor and table lamps and chandlers.
