Gallery: NASA and LEGO Launch Design Competition to Create Futuristic S...

There are no two greater names in the worlds of adventure and imagination than NASA and LEGO. Now the famous toy-maker and space agency have teamed up to launch a design competition to help inspire the next generation of aerospace engineers. The “NASA Missions: Imagine and Build” Competition opens this week, and it invites entrants to invent the future of flight.

The first category in the competition is “Inventing our Future of Flight.” It invites entrants to create their own visions of future aircraft. Students can enter in one of two age groups – the first ranging from 13-18, and the second for ages 13 and older. Entrants can fashion a model from LEGO bricks or use the LEGO Digital Designer computer program, and they must complete a technical paper.

The second category, called “Imagine our Future Beyond Earth,” asks participants to conjure and build a vehicle that can move through air, space, or over the ground. Plans can be based in hard physics or based upon a conceptual exercise. This category is open to ages 16 and older only. The grand prize will be the production of a LEGO set by the designer and a host of NASA memorabilia.

What better way to encourage young minds to engage in the world around them than by handing them a set of building blocks, a challenge, and the promise of a spectacular amount of fun?
