"I was commissioned to create this sculpture, but I can't tell you why. Or who it is," artist Nathan Sawaya writes about his "Red Headed Man" sculpture made of hundreds of LEGO bricks. Well, we think that the bearded figure looks an awful lot like our favorite late night talk show host (sorry Jay) Conan O'Brien! Click through our gallery to see more of Sawaya's incredible LEGO art - including his remarkable rendition of Stephen Colbert!
As you can see, Sawaya is somewhat of a LEGO art savant — his New York studio is currently filled with 1.5 million colored bricks. He makes everything from human figures to architectural models to portraits out of the colorful toy bricks, delighting kids and adults alike with his creations. And we were impressed to hear him say in a recent interview on New York Nonstop that many of the LEGO pieces he uses are recycled.
Sawaya’s creations are currently touring North America as a show called “The Art of the Brick”. The exhibition is the only one of its kind focusing exclusively on LEGO as an art medium. The works that are part of the show were constructed using close to one million LEGOs. You can check to see if The Art of the Brick is coming to a museum near you here.
