Sean Miller‘s brilliant National Geographic bookshelf started out as a cluttered stack of magazines in his living room. One of 23 finalists in our Spring Greening Contest, the design is made from 80 magazines coated in a water/starch mixture and cut with a bandsaw, leaving a clean interior and an offset exterior. The finish is very satisfying, as the stacked pages look almost like weathered wood bordered by the iconic National Geographic yellow. Good green design is about clever reuse, great aesthetics and functionality — this bookshelf is all of the above with a healthy dose of irony.
