3D Systems [5] launched a new 3D printer [6] at the 2013 CES [7], which boasts “the largest print volume in its category,” according to an announcement from the firm [8]. Called the CubeX, the printer is able to print an object “as big as a basketball,” says the company, with 1,070 cubic inches of volume, or 10.8” x 10.45” x 9.5”. The printer is targeted at tech enthusiasts, serious hobbyists, educators, and entrepreneurs, with pricing starting at $2,499.
The CubeX line offers single-, dual-, or three-color printing. It provides various options for resolution: High definition (125 micron), Crisp definition (250 micron), and Standard definition (500 micron); the device allows print fill density of light, medium, or solid. It works with both PLA and ABS plastics. In its background materials [10], 3D Systems says Cubex is ideal “for budget-conscious entrepreneurs developing their new products, educators who need larger print sizes, greater precision or more material choices, and serious hobbyists who want … professional quality and expanded features.” The company claims that such features are “not available on any other 3D printer in this category.”
CubeX debuted at this week’s CES show [11] in Las Vegas, Nev. The company is now accepting orders and plans to start shipping on Feb. 8, 2013.
