Ford has some exciting new vehicles in the works, including a new Ford Fusion Hybrid [1] that will reportedly get as much as 48 mpg, which could rival the Toyota Prius [2]. The latest Ford Inside News report also mentions the company’s plans for an EcoBoost engine, which may be included in the next Escape. With the current Toyota Prius reigning supreme amongst hybrids, other manufacturers are scrambling to make their own equivalents.

The beginning of 2012 can expect a “product blitz” from Ford [4] – and many of the products we expect to see are energy efficient or eco friendly. In addition to the Fusion’s anticipated increase in fuel efficiency, Ford plans to release a new hybrid [5], the C-Max, which will take the place of Ford’s Vertek/Escape model hybrid. The Escape will still be available, but instead of having hybrid features, it will include a new energy efficient [6] 1.6 liter EcoBoost engine, which surpasses its former mpg. The new Ford Focus hatchback will also receive a 2.0 liter EcoBoost engine, available in North America and Europe. A tiny version, for Europe’s B-Max subcompact MPV will gain a 1-liter EcoBoost engine as well.

EcoBoost aside, the Ford Fusion is anticipated to be the biggest seller [7] of the season, with a projected 50 percent increase in sales. The Fusion’s coveted mpg [8] increase will be partially due to an 8 speed e-CVT transmission.  Should the Fusion achieve its goal of 48 mpg in city traffic, it could rival Prius’ record 51 mpg highway rating, setting a new bar for Ford.
