Gallery: New SmartCharge LED Lightbulb Works Even When the Power Goes O...

SmartCharge just unveiled a brilliant LED lightbulb that works even during power outages! The innovative bulb features a built-in battery, so it can be switched on in emergency situations when the grid goes down. Best of all, the bulbs can cut electricity use by up to 90% compared to other lights, which means they could seriously lower your electricity bill.

The secret to SmartCharge‘s technology lies in a special “Grid & Switch Sensor” that is built into the bulb. The sensor automatically detects when a grid failure occurs, at which point the bulb can be powered by a built-in battery. The bulb’s battery constantly charges while the power is on, so you’ll never be left in the dark in an emergency situation. The bulbs also have a really long lifespan – they’re rated for up to 40,000 hours (or the equivalent of 25 years). The team is currently raising funds for the design via a Kickstarter page – take a look here for more information.

I’ve had this bulb in multiple sockets, lamps, light fixtures, you name it, and it still doesn’t work as advertised. Power has gone out but the bulb wouldn’t come on. In other scenarios, the light would come on and off randomly and quite frequently and it’s not supposed to do that. They don’t tell you that it won’t work in most fixtures until you buy it and call complaining, then you find out the truth. It’s a good idea but this product just isn’t made well. I’ve been using it for some time now and would never buy it again!
