Ever since 2007, the people at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute [2] have tracked the fuel economy [3] of cars purchased in the US. On Wednesday, the team released the numbers for March 2013, revealing that the average fuel economy had reached 24.6 mpg, which is an all-time high. The report shows just how far we have come since October, 2007, when the fuel economy averaged a measly 20 mpg.

In order to reach the number, the UMTRI combines the monthly vehicle sales data with the fuel ratings from the EPA [5] Fuel Economy Guide. Every month the fuel economy has crept its way up, with a few dips here and there, but the overall trend is moving in a positive direction. For instance, in September 2009 the average mpg dipped from 22.5 to 21, but jumped back up to 22 the next month.

Now, before we get too excited, the average fuel economy [6] in the UK [7] is 45 mpg, so we shouldn’t pat ourselves on the back for a job well done quite yet. But we certainly can’t complain about improvement, no matter how slight.
