New Yorkers, Recycle Your Gadgets at LES Ecology Center E-Waste Collections
Americans created more than 3 million tons of electronic waste in 2008, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, and only 13.6 percent of it was recycled. With another holiday season behind us, many are adding to that number as they throw out old TVs and computers to make room for new techy toys. Throughout January, the Lower East Side Ecology Center will be collecting used or broken electronics at different locations in the city during their annual “After the Holidays” E-waste Events.
Electronics are complicated to recycle, but there are dozens of resources out there that simplify the process for you. Because most electronics contain a variety of toxic materials like lead, mercury, arsenic, and brominated flame retardants, it’s important to take the extra time to properly dispose of e-waste. Find your nearest drop-off location below and help the Ecology Center reach their goal of collecting 100 million tons!
