NewActon Nishi is a new apartment complex in the middle of Canberra that is aiming to be Australia’s greenest residential development. But don’t go thinking that this will be a boring ‘green building’. NewActon Nishi will feature a sexy minimalist aesthetic in addition to some exciting eco-conscious features.

NewActon Nishi is currently being developed by the Molonglo Group and was designed by Fender Katsalidis Architects in association with Suppose Design Office, Oculus, and Arup. When it is completed it will be the third in a series of buildings that form part of the very green NewActon Precinct.

The project is a mixed-use development with 280 units and 20,000 square meters in office space, as well as galleries, shops, cafes and, wait for it, wait for it – a sake bar! The building will be a showcase of sustainability and is attempting to achieve an 8.6 NatHERS rating out of 10 (trust me, this is hard), relying heavily on passive design. As part of their sustainability goals, they plan to involve artists, craftspeople and designers in creating the look and feel of an ‘über-cool’ village.

For Nishi to become a unique apartment complex, it is important to have a decent common room where a range of facilities are provided for the residents only to use to bring the community together. Or at least to have the room available for later update of facilities, eg. piano, pool table, table tennis, dance floor, book shelves or reading area, just something that can be used for indoor activities…so that the residents can get to know one another to have a sense of real community. Anyway, this is also the picture we were given when purchasing the apartment and I do hope this is still happening.

Looking forward to the exciting Nishi completion.

It’s so good to finaly see an Australian project appear on the website. I’ve been following this blog for almost a year now, and it’s not very often I read about something which is happening in my own country. I’m sure we’re not void of green inovation, but I do feel we’re lagging behind the rest fo the developed world.

Thank you to Inhabitat for the article on NewActon Nishi. We are committed to creating Australia’s ‘greenest’ development in history, and from the amount of retweets (thank you) we can see there are many people out there as excited as we are.

We’d like to invite all graphic designers, artists and creatives to be a part of NewActon Nishi by entering (for free) the NewActon Nishi design competition. Showcase your visual skills and design the new corporate identity and visual language to represent NewActon Nishi. Prizes include cash, MacBook Air laptops and exposure to some of the organisations listed above, and more of Australia’s most influential artistic professionals who are involved in the NIshi project.

You can head to the website for more information (http://pea.to/HG). We’re also on Facebook (http://pea.to/Tt) and Twitter (@newactonnishi).

    Thank you and good luck.
