Bratislava-based Nice Architects just unveiled their new North Star Apartments in the town of Senec, Slovakia. The project's unique façade features a series of protruding geometric terraces that give the entire building the appearance of movement. The terraces were designed using sun position calculations, and from the pedestrian perspective they look like star-shaped objects hovering above the road.
Nice Architects‘ North Star Apartments is a low-cost residential building with 91 apartments and five small shops. The housing units are affordably priced and feature balconies that emphasize views from the flats while providing an acoustic buffer against the busy street. The system of balconies provides sufficient privacy and allows natural light to enter the units. The volumetric interplay of the balconies reflects the presence of an observatory across the street.
While the openings optimize the amount of natural lighting towards the west side, an inner courtyard provides a peaceful space for the inhabitants that is sheltered from the noise of the street. This green space establishes a fresh atmosphere in the low-energy building.
