Nissan Leaf is a World Car of the Year Finalist, Chevy Volt Not on List

by , 02/11/11

The list of finalists for the 2011 World Car of the Year has been announced and though the Nissan Leaf made the cut the Chevy Volt was swept aside. The World Car of the Year is decided by journalists from around the world that write about the auto industry. Considering the many awards that have been showered upon the extended-range Volt, it is interesting that the panel of journalistic judges chose the all-electric Leaf as their singular green nominee.

The Volt has no shortage of awards — it has won the North American Car of the Year, Motor Trend’s 2011 Car of the Year, Green Car Journal’s 2011 Green Car of the Year, Automobile’s 2011 Automobile of the Year and is on the top ten list for Car and Driver and Ward’s AutoWorld for 2011 — so it shouldn’t have a hit in confidence by not being on the World Car of the Year List. The Leaf on the other hand has nabbed only the European Car of the Year award but has stepped aside as the Volt started grabbing titles left and right.

The World Car of the Year was started in 2005 and an American car has never won the top spot — in fact the new Jeep Grand Cherokee is the only other American car on the list. The list of cars will be whittled down to three by the judges — those three will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show — and then the finalist will be revealed at the New York Auto Show in April.

It’s not surprising to me that the Volt was left off the list. Most of the ‘awards’ given to the Volt were obviously bought-and-paid-for. IIRC, Motor Trends “Volt is Car of the Year” article didn’t mention the Leaf once. My first thought upon reading the article was “If the Volt is supreme, how about a compare and contrast with the Leaf”. But since there wasn’t one, that speaks volumes to me.
