Word on the street is that Nissan will add $2,400 to the price of the Leaf [1]next year bumping the total cost of the car up to $35,200. That still clocks in well below the cost of the Chevy Volt [2], which has a price tag of $39,995, and for the increased cost Nissan will be adding a few extras to the all-electric vehicle [3]. The fast charging port and cold weather package will become standard in all Leafs and with the $7,500 tax credit from the government for this zero-emissions vehicle [3] the new cost to consumers will be $28,520 – still pretty affordable.

With the new cold weather package, Nissan Leaf [1] owners will be able to enjoy heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, heated side mirrors, larger vents for the rear passengers as well as a heater for the battery to zap it to life on cold winter days. The fast charging port will cut charging time in half for drivers and was previously a $700 add on. In addition to the new features — which Nissan says come in response to comments from drivers who have been out on the road already in their Leafs — they will be releasing the Leaf in a handful of new markets next year.

Many enthusiastic consumers have eagerly anticipated ordering a Nissan LEAF of their own, and now we can make zero-emissions mobility [3] a reality in more markets,” said Brian Carolin, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing, Nissan North America. “In response to direct feedback from Nissan LEAF owners, the features that customers want most will come standard on the 2012 Nissan LEAF – including quick charging and cold-weather features.” New reservations will be taken starting this fall in Connecticut, Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York [4] and by the end of the year residents in Delaware, Indiana, Louisiana, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island will be able to pre-order the upgraded and more expensive Leaf [5].
