Nissan’s EV-02: The First Mass-Market Electric Car?

Nissan’s prototype EV-02 [5] may lack the streamlined curves and svelte sex appeal of today’s electric [6] super sportscars [7], however Nissan is hoping the technology behind this vehicle will power the first mass marketed EV! The milestone electric vehicle [8] is set to make a splash when it hits the states in 2010 with a 100 mile range and a price point of $20,000-$30,000.

Compared to the heavy hitters of the auto world, Nissan [9] is a relatively small company. What it lacks in size though, it more than makes up with their commitment to producing affordable electric vehicles [10]. The EV-02 is at the moment a rather spartan, souped-up cube city car, but it holds Nissan’s hope that they can break into the soon-to-be lucrative electric market [11].
The Ev-02 is expected to come to American shores sometime in 2010. It features an SAE standard charging system, that takes power from a 220-volt outlet, and takes around 4 hours to charge. The EV-02 is expected to run for around 100 miles before needing a full charge. It is not a speedy vehicle, but according to all [5] accounts [12], it works like a charm.
Nissan expects it to cost roughly around $20,000 to $30,000. As it is an electric vehicle, it will probably be eligible for a number of rebates so you can expect to pay a bit less than that.
