Plans like this one for responding to the limits of the earth, do it with more efficient growth, and that's been the standard model of sustainability for 40 years,sustaining growth at all costs. Yep, that's been the reality of our telling ourselves little deceptions, saving some energy with one thing and multiplying our uses of energy with other things. Really, it's not to bum you out that I mention that it's actually well established 150 year old economics that improving efficiency typically makes using energy easier, so everyone uses more. That's also exactly what's been happening too, and provides an answer to the puzzle of why everyone has wanted consumption to go down but it has just gone up ever faster. We're not being serious about this. A few people have actually thought that spelled failure for our efforts to reign in our impacts on the earth. The past 50 years of saying we were heading in one direction but going in the opposite as fast as we could has cause a lot of damage to undo. In a 500 year project we can say "oops..." and realize that 50 years of misguided effort was just our first try. The numbers are so very bad and getting so very much worse faster than expected, we better get it right the second time, though! I am very happy that this plan passed. Since New York is such a major city I think that other cities will see how much of an improvement they are making and will follow after them. It is so important that this plan passed, people need to realize the global warming issues that we are facing. I think that this is a step in the right direction. It is awesome that this plan passed. I think it is important that New York did this because it is such a large city and hopefully other cities will follow the good measures that New York is taking.
