NYC Passes Landmark Greener Greater Buildings Plan!

Just last night, the New York City Council voted overwhelmingly to pass the Greener, Greater Buildings Plan [4] – a package of bills aiming to reduce New York City [5]‘s carbonĀ emissions by almost 5%, create more than 17,000 jobs, and saveĀ New Yorkers [5] $700 million dollars a year in energy costs (via Campaign for New York’s Future [6]). While we were disappointed with Mayor Bloomberg’s changes to the legislation (which we detailed yesterday [7]) before it went to the City Council, we think it is important to report that the revised plan did pass and will still require smaller improvements [8], oversee the creation of an energy code for buildings and require building owners to offer tenants information on their individual energy [9] use.
Although all buildings over 50,000 square feet won’t be required to make retrofits, Donna De Costanzo, a senior attorney specializing in energy policy at the Natural Resources Defense Council said, “It’s one of the most comprehensive, aggressive efforts [11] anywhere in the country.” (via Crain’s [12]) That sounds a step in the right direction to combat climate change [13] and to make New York City [5] a greener, greater place to live!
