  • Nearly twelve years after the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers fell, construction workers have finally topped off 1 World Trade Center with an iconic spire. The capping of the 1,776-foot-tall building brings the structure to its full height, adding what is now the tallest building in the western hemisphere to the New York City skyline. The addition also symbolizes a victorious comeback that honors the many who lost their lives.

“This really is a symbolic moment because this building really represents the resiliency of this country,” said Port Authority Vice Chair Scott Rechler, as reported by USA Today. “These people, the thousand men and women who have worked here tirelessly, really as a tribute for the people that perished on 9-11 right on this site.”

The capping of the building was originally slated to commence last month, but due to high winds, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey were forced to scrap their plans.

The spire, which will serve a television broadcast facility housed in the building, contains 18 steel sections and three communication rings. The heaviest piece of the section was installed in January and weighs a whopping 67 tons. The tower will officially open in 2014.
