One thousand new superintendents graduated yesterday from “One Year, One Thousand Green Supers, ” another exciting green initiative sponsored by the city. Now in its second year of operation, the program has been a huge success so far. The program is a 40-hour class that trains supers in the latest practices for energy efficient operations. The class also trains workers to tackle wasted energy problems and helps them create a green operating plan along with performing cost-benefit analysis for building owners and managers .
“One Year, One Thousand Green Supers provides a low-cost way to make our buildings more energy and cost efficient, and our environment cleaner, all while saving our city millions of dollars,” said Mayor Bloomberg . The program was launched last year by the mayor, local union leaders, and superintendents.
The program is being funded by the Department of Energy through a grant of $3 million, and is approved by the U.S. Green Building Council . Backed by a DOE report, the program proposes that by using smarter management practice, energy use in buildings can be reduced by 20 to 40 percent. A similar report by McKinsey & Company also found “that greener buildings could save the New York real estate industry as much as $230 million a year in operating expenses.”
In regards to the program itself, the curriculum “combines classes and field exercises with elective courses, including renewable energy technologies, green roofs and water reuse.” The program expects to train 1,000 additional supers by the end of the year.
