Gallery: 12×12 Design Competition Calls for Entrants to Upcycle Histori...

Calling all New York furniture designers! Third Ward, Build it Green NYC and Sawkill Lumber Company have launched the 12 x 12 design contest, a unique opportunity to repurpose a piece of New York’s past. Twelve lucky designers will be chosen to recycle materials from twelve historic sites in New York City into innovative furniture pieces, which will then be exhibited at Spring 2012 Design Week!

The contest gives a historic piece of New York a new life as a model of contemporary design. The resulting piece is not only a great symbol of sustainable design, but also a tribute to the historical culture of each site. Designers that display high quality, innovative contemporary design and commitment to sustainability are invited to apply to a board of seasoned designed professionals that includes journalists, interior designers, and architects.

The twelve winners will randomly be assigned one of the historic sites, that range from Brooklyn warehouses to a public school, a factory, a historic theater, and even Jon Pulitzer’s horse stable. The most notable site is the recently demolished seminal East Village haunt Mars Bar, whose pine flooring will be recycled for this contest. Each site brings its own historical narrative and also its own variation of wood. Old growth pine, spruce plants, western fir, and Brazilian Ipe are all represented.

12 x 12 is an exciting opportunity for furniture designers to engage with New York’s history, while also showing off their personal creativity and vision. Applications are due January 31, 2012, so put your thinking caps on!
