As car-free denizens of New York, we rely on the subway to get us from here to there, and more New Yorkers than ever are doing the same. In 2011, 1.6 billion straphangers took to the trains, making it the busiest year for the subway since 1950. The MTA [5] released the statistic this morning (along with a boatload of other data [6] about subway ridership in 2011), noting that overall, ridership grew 2.26 percent from 2010. Despite the seemingly small increase, we’re happy to see more people getting out of their cars and onto public transportation. Here’s to another increase in 2012!
