30 Woolly Sheep Invade NYC’s Bryant Park Lawn

New York’s Bryant Park is popular with picnickers all year long, but today the green area has been invaded by a different kind grazer – a herd of 30 sheep. The woolly visitors were brought into the city from an upstate farm as part of a Campaign for Wool event. The sheep will munch and fertilize the lawn within their 40-foot-by-40-foot enclosure to highlight the benefits of the natural fiber and support the campaign, which was started in 2010 by the Prince of Wales.
Speaking to DNAInfo.com , Jerome Barth, vice president of business affairs for the Bryant Park Association said, “We’re fully appreciative of this event. We got very excited about the visual of having sheep in the park.”
Of course, as you would expect, there were some concerns from some committee members about sanitation problems and the prospect of cleaning up after the 30 sheep, but one of the sanitation crew members noted it wasn’t a massive challenge.
“Apparently sheep poop is hard pellets, so it’s easy to pick up,” he said. “We’ll take care of that. I don’t see any problem with that.”
As you’d expect The Campaign for Wool is a pro-wool campaign that was launched when His Royal Highness noticed an overall decline in the industry. He launched the push in order to tout the benefits of the fabric, praising it as durable, easy to clean and breathable. “All we are saying is give fleece a chance,” the campaign’s slogan reads.
Other events being held in the park to coincide with the campaign include draining the fountain and filling it with wool and yarn , as well as covering several trees in the park with wool fabric. A display will also be set up to showcase how raw wool is sorted as well as demonstrations of crafting and knitting and other wool-centered activities.
“These vignettes that we’re creating will show the different uses of the finished product of wool,” said Ken Solomon, of Mission Public Relations, the firm handling the event coordination.”They [sheep] sort of become the focal point. They are so beautiful.”
